CARSTAIRS

The Township and Barony of Carstairs belonged, from the middle of the twelfth century, if not from an earlier period, to the Bishops of Glasgow, the rents thereof forming part of their personal revenue. Their title to it was confirmed by Pope Alexander III in 1170, and by Honorius III, in 1216. The lands were managed by a prepositus, factor or bailie Jordanus, prepositus de Castelares, attested a grant of Robert Hertford, precentor in the Cathedral of Glasgow, to the Abbey of Paisley in 1225. In 1587 the Barony of Carstairs was annexed by the crown Among subsequent owners were The Lockharts, who held the property for a period. From then passed to William Fullerton, whose ashes were placed in the mausoleum at Carstairs House . In 1819 Hernry Montieth bought the Estate, whose family still live in the Village today. .
